hanging installation

Running a HP Pavilion notebook. Have used the MS utility to determine that my machine can run Vista, i.e. I have sufficient HD, RAM and clock speed. Have created new partition for installation with a view to running it in a dual boot environment. I run Norton internet security incl. Norton AV and have disabled/turn these off for installation of x86 build. DVD runs through the information collection part without problems. I chose to install via the custom root, but as soon as the screen moves to the installation files, with the 'copying files to the computer' in bold the machine hangs with HD and DVD drive going quiet. Only way to retrieve is via a hard reboot, which returns to the hang screen image with no further action. I then remove the DVD, reboot and I'm back with booting to XP which continues to operate normally. Have already installed IE7 beta 3, Media Player 11 beta and Office 12 Beta 2 which all installed without problems. Hence, am perplexed as to next steps. Suggestions welcomed.

I have a similar problem with dv8000t purchased earlier this year. I tried beta2 install by booting from the vista dvd, with and without native sata enabled, similar problem. I don't get a hang, I get a bsod fatal system error. This occurs right after 'copying files to the computer', a few seconds into the next xp style boot screen. Happens every time. I want my $10 dvd shipping fee back.

I put Vista on my HP ZV5000 laptop and was really disappointed once I got most things working. It took forever to boot and then took for ever to load the first program after that it ran OK but wouldn't go into hibernate wouldn't sleep just didn't act right. Setting up the network as an another adventure then I got it working I went on a weekend trip and used Ramada Inn's network nothing worked at first as I use FireFox as a browser, I started IE and it took me to a page to accept the terms of usage and everything was fine until I came back after dinner. Some else had the IP address I had before shutting down Vista and for the next two days I couldn't release renew the IP address to get another one. Then I get home and have to setup my home network again and reo all that even though I had said to keep these settings even if it wasn't available.
I did turn in a report about the networking part but don't expect much to change soon so I went back to XP with a clean install and the laptop seems extra zippy now, so something good came of the Vista attempt.
